Construction News ‘Specialists in Construction Awards 2007’

Concrete Repairs Limited (CRL) swept the board at the ‘Construction News’ hosted, third annual ‘Specialists in Construction Awards 2007’. The company won not only the individual ‘Concrete’ category, but also the ‘Special Award for Exceptional Performance’, selected from the entire fifty-three companies that reached the finals of this year’s event.

The reviewing panel, Chaired by Sir Michael Latham, was full of praise for the specialist concrete renovation and strengthening, corrosion control, waterproofing, external wall insulation façade installation, building and infrastructure surveying contractor. Under the ‘Concrete’ category the panel described the company as “A pioneer of concrete repair techniques that has invested heavily in R&D and the first company to develop and install cathodic protection systems for concrete and steel structures.” The panel was particularly impressed by the fact that CRL is currently involved with Keele University to pioneer new surveying techniques.

Announcing CRL as winners of the ‘Special Award for Exceptional Performance’, the panel commented that the company’s submission “Was the best all round entry in all categories.” CRL was praised for its commitment to providing a quality service, its sustained investment in research and for developing its School of Excellence training facility. “Everywhere we looked, we found evidence that CRL aims for the top and is reaping the rewards. The company was hitting all the right buttons,” stated a panel member.

Best Place to Work in Construction Award 2007

Concrete Repairs Limited (CRL) has won the ‘Best Place to Work in Construction’ award for 2007, under the Civil Engineering Contractor category.

A key element of the awards, hosted by ‘Contract Journal’ and sponsored by Construction Skills and Hays Construction, is that the entrant’s score is based upon the comments submitted by its own employees, to an independently created questionnaire. Thus, unlike many other awards, it is the candidate’s own employees that decide whether the Company is successful, or not.

Tony Rimoldi, CRL’s Managing Director commented, “CRL continually strives to create and maintain a decent environment in which its employees operate. I recognise that nothing can be perfect but all CRL staff have my assurance that where ever possible we will continue to improve”.

Andy Swan Award 2006 - Joint Runner-up

Specialist main contractor, Concrete Repairs Limited (CRL) has won the joint runner-up Andy Swan 2006 Award for external wall insulation work carried out at 90 Park Lane, a town centre residential development project in Croydon, Surrey.

The Andy Swan awards, presented for the best use of external wall insulation systems, are sponsored annually by the Insulated Render and Cladding Association (INCA).

RDJW Architects specified the Epsitec external wall insulation system, adding 80 mm of EPS insulation to the 150 mm mineral fibre inside the steel frame, to achieve a U-value of less than 0.15W/m2K to reduce carbon emissions, help tenants/owners reduce fuel bills and eradicate the risk of condensation.

The residential building’s unusually shaped curved roof, combined with a contrasting dark terracotta tiling and bright external render imparts high visual impact. The walls have been finished with a flexible, anti-crack, through-coloured silicone render.

Both the system designer; Wetherby Building Systems Ltd and Concrete Repairs Limited (CRL), are members of INCA.

Best Refurbished Car Park 2006 Award

Multi-storey car park (MSCP) 3, located at Gatwick Airport South Terminal, has won the 'Best refurbished car park 2006' award, presented by the UK's 'Parking Review' journal.

The renovation work was carried out by specialist main contractor Concrete Repairs Limited (CRL), in partnership with Warings Construction Group and BAA.

The refurbishment ‘challenge’ for BAA was to develop a good as new, state-of-the-art car park that would provide a further 25 to 30 years of operational life, whilst catering for specific airport passenger requirements, with safety and functionality paramount.

One of Warings initial tasks was to identify a repair specialist able to provide corrosion control, concrete removal and replacement, anti-carbonation coating application and deck waterproofing expertise. In addition, the company appointed had to comply with BAA’s latest and most highly specified car park standards – hence the appointment of CRL.
