The main block and operating theatres are clad with precast concrete panels. These 1960’s panels were deteriorating with cracking and spalling of the concrete. The client decided to repair the panels in-situ while the hospital remained fully operational.

- Specialist access to the external facades
- External refurbishment of the main block
- Concrete repairs
- Coatings
- Replacement windows
- Internal refurbishment of the wards and theatre block
- New pumped floor screeds and floor finishes
- Fire dampers
- Radiators
- New internal linings
- Mechanical & Electrical works
- Toilet refurbishment work
- Asbestos removal
- New nurse stations
CRL designed a unique access system using a temporary steel frame fixed to the building frame over the surrounding low level buildings which enabled the use of mast climbers. The concrete facades were repaired, followed by the application of a corrosion inhibitor and a two coat anti carbonation coating. At the same time the windows were replaced, asbestos removed and new insulation added.
Internally the wards were refurbished with new flooring, fire dampers, M&E, new wall linings and radiators. This was undertaken while the main hospital block remained operational by vacating three floors at any one time and working on the middle floor.
The complex project was completed three months ahead of a three year programme. Working in Partnership with all the professional team ensured a very successful project. CRL registered the project with the Considerate Constructors Scheme and in 2004 was awarded the top award as the “Most Considerate Site” beating 2000 entrants that year.
