In October 2006 Concrete Repairs Ltd (CRL) began works at Bournemouth Pier, a unique 130 year old reinforced concrete structure.

Scope of Works:      

• Survey and identification of defective and damaged concrete. Removal of concrete by hydro-demolition.
• Coating the reinforcement with a corrosion inhibiting primer
• Installation of Sacrificial Anodes
• Application of dry spray concrete over cutout concrete areas

Where necessary, replacement of the reinforcement was carried out if a significant loss of cross section had occurred due to corrosion or chloride attack. Sacrificial anodes were wired into the exposed reinforcement to protect against incipient anode induced corrosion. This was due to the high chloride ion content of the parent concrete and the structures location. The area of the breakout was repaired with the application of dry spray concrete.

The first phase was to erect scaffolding to enable repair of the in-situ support bents of the approach structure. This was followed by repairing the West side of the pier then moving around to the East side. For repairs to the low level beams within the tidal range suspended scaffolding was hung from the structure.

There was a high degree of safety management throughout the scheme. The works were supervised from a fully coded safety boat mother ship and a subsidiary rescue boat. Trial rescues were carried out throughout, in what is a harsh environment.
