In October of 2008 Concrete repairs Limited began work at Centenary Quay, Southampton. The works were fully completed in January 2009.
Scope of Works:
- Carry out repairs identified by client to existing dock structure
- Waterproof deck of quay
- Install a sacrificial anode cathodic protection scheme along the lengths of North Quay and Centenary Quay
Works began by carrying out repairs to existing beams and columns underneath Centenary Quay. These repairs were carried out from scaffolding fortunately repairs were not affected by the tidal range.
The top deck was sealed by firstly carrying out remedial works to existing joints which involved planning out a 450mm strip and laying a bitumastic compound. Smaller openings in the deck were sealed by crack injection. The whole deck was then treated with a corrosion inhibitor.
A sacrificial anode system was the introduced along the length of the quay to protect the existing sheet piles from further corrosion. This involved welding 280 aluminum alloy anodes weighing approximately 40kg to the sheet piles. This was done during low tides hanging the anodes from an elongated bracket, supporting them from the quayside and welding from a barge. The tidal restraints meant working hours had to be flexible to accommodate and achieve the productivity required by the client.
There were several environmental factors to be considered during the project so the EA were involved from an early stage and regularly consulted.
