Preston station was part of a West Coast Mainline (WCML) facility upgrade undertaken by Network Rail involving 17 stations which includes parking improvements.
Network Rail employed Arup Consulting to develop outline designs for the new build car parks. This specification included the selection of a Conideck deck membrane manufactured by BASF to protect the concrete decks , provide skid resistance and with the use of colour finishes provide a safe and welcoming environment for users of the facility.
Galliford Try won the main construction contract and subcontracted the decking work to CRL who are approved applicators for the Conideck materials.
The colour scheme of the deck membrane was important to Network Rail and the Conideck membranes had to be produced in bespoke colours to match the corporate colours of Virgin who manage the WCML. As safety was a big part of the design of the car park, four colours were chosen, including high-visibility traffic yellow for the pedestrian walkways. The car park also features numbered spaces as part of the Car Park Safety Scheme.
Network Rail is delighted with the finished results achieved at Preston: “We are very happy with the scheme and the floor coating gives the car park a world-class finish. It looks great and the subcontractor’s team were brilliant, one of the best on the contract!”
