Early 2009 saw CRL complete phase 4 of the structural strengthening of Hammersmith Road Bridge, which was constructed in 1860 using cast iron beams and it spans two Network Rail lines and a London Underground track.
Scope of Works:
- Preparation of the cast iron beams by vacuum grit blasting
- Supply & installation of ultra high modulus carbon fibre plates
The beam capacity was assessed at 17t and the deck plates 3t so there was requirement to replace or strengthen the bridge for 40t loading. Mouchel Consulting recommended using composites to strengthen the beams and deck plates and CRL completed the supply and installation over a period of three years in 4 phases.
Each phase of the work was undertaken during rail occupation periods over Christmas and Easter maintenance closures. The nature of the work in a very tight time frame with the added rail safety issues required complex planning and preparation to ensure successful completion. The maximum occupation period for a phase of the works was 96 hours over a Christmas and New Year period.
