Daer Valve Tower is situated in the middle of the reservoir and can only be reached via a steel bridge. The concrete corbels around the tower were in a poor condition with significant cracking and spalling.
Scope of Works:
- Provision of a fully sealed scaffold access system
- Hydrodemolition
- Dry spray concrete
- Masonry repairs
This was a particularly challenging project for CRL to ensure safe working over water and the containment of all repair materials and waste to prevent contamination of the water supply. This was achieved by the erection of a complex fully encapsulated scaffolding suspended from the valve tower.
The defective areas of concrete were removed using hydrodemolition. The exposed steel reinforcement was treated with a primer and the concrete reinstated using a pre-bagged dry spray concrete. The features of the corbels were recreated by using temporary timber battens along the angled arises to provide the line for the sprayed concrete. The concrete was trowel finished to provide a uniform appearance.
In addition to the concrete repairs there was also some masonry repairs required to the block wall between the concrete corbels.
