In February 2007 CRL were awarded the contract to undertake comprehensive external and internal refurbishment on one of Wessex Water’s more unique structures; Wyke Reservoir, a 100 year old red brick arch structure situated in Weymouth, Dorset.
The contract commenced in March 2007 and following trials and demonstrations, Wessex Water approved the stripping and replacement of 0.5 metres of topsoil from the reservoir roof using a long reach excavator. Due to the design/age of the reservoir this method of excavation was necessary to avoid placing any excess loads on the reservoir roof, a strict stipulation of the contract.
The external refurbishment works included:
- Removal of all the topsoil and overburden (earth, puddle clay & clay) covering the reservoir using a long reach excavator (600-700m3)
- Washing down of the entire roof surface
- Concrete repairs to reservoir roof, sides and entrance building
- Waterproofing of the Reservoir roof using Dualseal membrane (circa 900 m2)
- Installation of deckdrains over the reservoir and perimeter drainage around the reservoir
- Replacement of the overburden and topsoil and re-landscaping
The Internal works included:
- All areas of the tank internals were cleaned and prepared by 4000psi water jet
- Removal of roots/vegetation that had penetrated the wall and roof of the reservoir
- Pointing and concrete repairs to walls, arches and the soffit of the reservoir
- Installation of a new stainless steel handrail to the access steps
- Final cleaning of the reservoir compartment on completion of the works ready for chlorination by the Client
Whilst excavating, human bones were found. Fortunately they were quite old and after some investigation it was discovered that the site had actually been a Saxon-Roman burial ground.
