As part of the major Kings Cross Station redevelopment in 2008, Balfour Beatty required roof waterproofing to be applied to the reinforced concrete roof of the Northern Ticket Hall substructure (approximate area 4,500m²).
Scope of Works:
- Surface preparation
- Priming and blinding primer with kiln dried sand
- Spray application of waterproof membrane
- Bedding of GRP tiles onto bitumen based tile adhesive
BASF Conipur was selected by Balfour Beatty as the roof membrane for the speed of application and durability. This is hot sprayed polyurethane which provides a durable, flexible, waterproof membrane.
CRL prepared the concrete surfaces by captive shotblasting and diamond grinding. The surface was then primed with BASF Mastertop Primer and blinded with kiln dried sand. The BASF Conipur membrane was spray applied.
On completion of the waterproofing, CRL installed red GRP tiles bedded on BASF Aquaseal bitumen adhesive as an early warning system to prevent possible future damage to the membrane.
The site was very congested and CRL were required to make several unplanned visits, some of which were overnight and at weekends to complete the works. Notwithstanding the disruption on site, CRL helped Balfour Beatty achieve their milestone handover date to Metronet. CRL’s effort was recognized by our client in a letter which said:
“Please pass on our thanks to your team for all the hard work and being so flexible during the recent waterproofing operation.” Robert Oag, Project Manager, Balfour Beatty
Client: Balfour Beatty Civil Engineering
Final Contract Value: £160,000.00
