| Specialist main contractor, Concrete Repairs Limited (CRL) has completed a major £1.4m, forty-week, multi-storey car park (MSCP) refurbishment contract at Queen Anne Terrace, Cambridge, for Cambridge City Council. The car park, attached on one side to a Council sports centre and adjacent to Cambridge YMCA, plays a vital role in the Council’s development of local parking services.
Acting for the client, Consulting Engineers Peter Dann Associates undertook an initial condition survey, prepared a specification for the works and supervised CRL, who secured the contract via a competitive bid assessed on quality and cost. Architects for the project were Cambridge City Council’s in-house team. CRL closely managed the environmental impact of the works, in order to ensure that neighbouring sites remained undisturbed.
Work involved the complete refurbishment of all twelve levels and was carried out whilst the car park remained fully operational. The ‘belt and braces’ programme encompassed a detailed concrete condition survey, concrete repair work, the re-sealing of joints, new deck waterproofing, the installation of new barriers, signage, lighting and fire alarm systems. In addition, CRL refurbished the staircases and entrance and applied corrosion inhibitors and anti-carbonation coatings to all concrete surfaces.
The contract was registered with both the national ‘Considerate Constructors’ scheme and Cambridge City council’s own ‘Considerate Contractor’ scheme. Under the national scheme and against competition from another two thousand companies, CRL recently won a top award for a major hospital refurbishment project in Lincolnshire adjudged the UK’s ‘Most Considerate Site’ in 2004. The company hopes to repeat the prestigious achievement again in 2005.
Now that the Queen Anne Terrace MSCP refurbishment project is complete, Cambridge City Council plans to demolish the nearby Lionyard MSCP, in advance of its redevelopment as a retail complex.
