Such reinforced concrete structures suffer from corrosion of the reinforcement, which causes the concrete to spall and eventually leads to structural failure. The corrosion is initiated by the penetration of chlorides from the saline environment into the concrete. When the chlorides reach the reinforcement in sufficient concentration, the passive film on the steel is locally disrupted and corrosion will occur. Corrosion in this environment can be very aggressive, with rapid loss of steel section and major cracking and spalling of the concrete.

In addition to being unpredictable and aggressive, marine environments present some quite unique challenges when maintenance is required. Often the work is in tidal conditions, safe working access can be difficult and expensive to provide, the structure is difficult to inspect for initial assessments and sometimes the surrounding area can be designated an area of ‘Special Scientific Interest’ (SSI). All demand stringent environmental control procedures, as well as specialist knowledge and expertise.
