Multi-storey car parks (MSCPs) are an integral and increasingly important part of the UK infrastructure. Indeed, many companies and shopping complexes could not operate without them. The parking standards of ten years ago, however, are no longer acceptable. Today, car park users demand safe and secure facilities finished to a very high standard and this, in turn, has created a growing requirement for car park operators and owners to regularly inspect, maintain and develop their parking facilities.

MSCPs are unique and unusual structures. They are almost entirely exposed to wind, heat, rain, snow and de-icing salts causing many to suffer acutely from concrete deterioration. Such extreme weathering is often exacerbated by structural defects and safety shortcomings caused by poor design, construction and low standards of maintenance and repair.

Because of this, specialist main contractor Concrete Repairs Limited (CRL) has evolved the UK’s most comprehensive, professional and nation-wide MSCP structural refurbishment service. Fifty years experience has enabled the company to develop a range of unique renovation techniques specific to these rather odd structures, with most of the work undertaken by CRL’s own in-house operatives and all is explained in a new brochure, entitled ‘Professional Car Park Maintenance’ just published by the company.

In addition to carrying out the necessary repair, corrosion control, deck waterproofing, protective and decorative coatings, CRL is also set up to install new lighting, CCTV security, ticketing systems and vehicle barriers. The company also operates an independent inspection division, CRL Surveys, which is able to inspect the structure, identify the reasons and extent of the deterioration and provide costed repair options.

CRL is just one of a handful of companies to have acquired the Safety, Health, Environmental and Quality accreditation, which comprises OHSAS 18001:1999 covering Health and Safety Management, ISO 14001:1996 covering Environmental Management and ISO 9001:2000 Quality Systems.
