CRL Contracts Engineer
This is my story… a personal profile
Taking Strides
I joined the Survey Department of CRL in 2001 as an Engineering Technician. My first role was to assist in the conditional survey of the A40 at Harrow Road Bridge. The project involved the repair of all defective structural members, the installation of a cathodic protection system and the application of protective coatings. The key to ensuring a lasting performance of the remedial works was to effectively understand the root causes, location and type of defects, subsequently offering solutions where necessary. I was given the opportunity to learn a lot about the industry and in particular the commercial aspects involved in carrying out such works.
The Present
I soon progressed to Contracts Engineer. CRL has given me the chance to build on my past experience by allowing me to take on more responsibility and encouraging me to become more involved in contract management. I have just completed the refurbishment project of Lymington Road Estate as the site manager. The project not only strengthened my capability to manage a multi-disciplined site, but also to tackle the financial demands of such a project by using lean resource procurement strategies.
As with any discipline within the construction industry, continuous personal development determines the level of competence of any individual. In order to be able to face the challenges of tomorrow, I have received constant training and fantastic support from my Supervising Engineer and senior colleagues, while I study towards my professional qualifications to become a Chartered Engineer and was offered a formal training agreement with the company.
The Future
I believe that working for an industry leader in this specialist field has enabled me to rapidly develop my technical expertise and more importantly, the management skills necessary to be a competent and successful engineer.
