Parapet Safety
Systems
Bridge parapet replacement involves removing and installing new safety barriers along the edges of bridges, retaining walls or similar structures. Parapets provide important protection for both vehicles and pedestrians and are designed to help contain vehicles within the roadway.
Replacement is typically required when an existing parapet has reached the end of its serviceable life, has suffered impact damage, or no longer meets modern safety standards for vehicle containment or pedestrian protection. Upgrading bridge parapets helps ensure that structures comply with current safety requirements while maintaining the safe operation of the highway network.
Bridge Safety
Infrastructure
Modern parapet systems are available in a range of materials. Modular extruded parapet rail systems are manufactured from lightweight, corrosion-resistant aluminium, while galvanised steel is used for high containment systems. Precast concrete units can also be used for rapid installation of high containment systems due to their large mass, and lightweight FRP sections may be suitable for low containment or aesthetically sensitive structures.
Parapet Replacement
Solutions
On some projects it may be possible to reuse existing holding-down bolts, although it is more common for new anchor fixings to be drilled into the bridge edge beams. In some cases, a new reinforced concrete edge beam may also be required. Most bridge parapet replacement projects require temporary road closures, phased working or night shifts in order to minimise disruption to the public.
Early engagement through the Early Contractor Involvement (ECI) process is therefore critical to ensure works can be planned and delivered safely and efficiently. CRL Highways, has extensive experience in successfully delivering bridge parapet replacement projects while carefully managing safety, programme requirements and disruption to road users and stakeholders.
