The Repair & Rehabilitation of Concrete Water Industry Assets
Concrete has long been, and will continue to be, a fundamental construction material within the water industry. Concrete tanks and storage vessels play a critical role in the treatment of wastewater, as well as in the storage and treatment of potable water supplied to consumers. As these assets are predominantly constructed from concrete or steel, they are well suited to refurbishment rather than demolition and replacement, offering significant economic and sustainability benefits. The key challenge, therefore, is determining how best to refurbish these structures to ensure long-term performance and compliance.
The presentation, The Repair and Rehabilitation of Concrete Water Industry Assets, will introduce the latest British Standard for the protection and repair of concrete structures, BS EN 1504. It will outline the investigation and condition survey requirements for water utility assets and discuss common defects encountered in water industry structures. The presentation will provide guidance on the various aspects of concrete repair, explain corrosion prevention and its applications within the water industry, and highlight the benefits of protective coating systems. It will also review a selection of typical repair projects undertaken by CRL across both clean and wastewater sectors, examining why the repairs were required and assessing the effectiveness of the works in preventing future deterioration.
